Unveiling the Power of Nitrogen Gas Tanks: A Comprehensive Guide

In the realm of industrial, scientific, and even recreational applications, the use of nitrogen gas has become ubiquitous. Nitrogen gas tanks, weather high pressure cylinders or low pressure buffering tanks, play a crucial role in storing and delivering this inert gas for various purposes. Nitrogen gas tanks can be found in many different places for many different reasons.

Nitrogen, a colourless and odourless gas, constitutes approximately 78% of Earth's atmosphere. Its inert nature (Non-reactive) makes it an ideal choice for a wide array of applications, from preserving freshness in food packaging to purging systems and inflating tires. The use of nitrogen in its gaseous state is made possible by efficient storage and transport systems, primarily with nitrogen gas tanks.

Very common in fleets, industrial trucking and racing due to the scale, savings and performance respectively, it is less common in applications for the general public but not unheard of.

  2. Food Packaging and Processing: Nitrogen is an excellent gas for food packaging, helping to extend the shelf life of perishable products. Its inert properties prevent oxidation and inhibit the growth of spoilage-inducing microorganisms (bacteria). It should be noted that Nitrogen can not preserve fresh foods indefinitely but the change is significant and boosted even further if cool refrigeration temperatures are also used (apples kept fresh year round are due to storage facilities with Nitrogen and cool temperatures).

  3. Welding and Metal Fabrication: Nitrogen finds extensive use in welding and metal fabrication processes. It is employed for purging systems to prevent oxidation during welding, ensuring the quality of the final product. Imperfections in a weld can spell the end of its structural properties, during the welding process the heat involves is extreme, should Oxygen get caught up in the weld rapid oxidation (rust) causes defects. A shielding gas is used to purge the work area while also protecting the area from further contamination during the weld.

  4. Electronics Manufacturing: In the electronics industry, nitrogen is often used in the production of semiconductors and other electronic components. Its inert atmosphere helps maintain a clean and controlled environment, crucial for delicate manufacturing processes. The production of nitrogen goes hand in hand with the removal of humidity which is a major cause of damage to the micro circuitry in electronics manufacturing.

  5. Medical Applications: Nitrogen gas is utilized in medical applications, such as cryopreservation and as a carrier gas in medical lasers. Its low reactivity makes it suitable for a variety of medical procedures. Nitrogen is also used in combination with Oxygen and CO2 to form the ideal growing conditions weather for testing of bacteria or the growth of embryos/stem-cells.
